Is Taekwondo an ineffective Martial Art?Taekwondo seems to take a lot of criticism for not being effective in a fight situation. However, both Anthony Pettis and Anderson Silva utilized TKD kicks for their last win in the cage. Do you think Taekwondo is effective in a fight situation? My brother has high belts in TKD, before he pursued BJJ. A solid striking foundation is a great start for any fighter to have, although I believe the more disciplines one learns, the more tools one has. They can all be utilized effectively in the right hands—Marie Doucette ITF TKD is my discipline but i do think it should be combined with ground work too. We do basic ground work at our school every now and then, and our instructor used to box so we have that incorporated too.—Krystal Knowles Only if you combine it with wrestling, jiu jitsu and boxing!—Yael Grauer

Wrestling vs Ju-jitsuThe debate continues. Wrestlers might not be the most exciting to watch, but they are effective. Do you enjoy watching this style or do you prefer the skill of Jujitsu? To Chikara, The term wrestling is kind of vague but I take it to mean all styles that involve the goal of taking someone to the ground and submitting them on the ground. My preference is Jujutsu which also includes ground work because my primary goal is self-defense. There are no rules on the street so being on the ground is not conductive to self-defence. In jujutsu learning how to get up from the ground is the goal rather than submitting someone while on the ground. I've always said that my ground game is you being on the ground and not me. In self-defence, the ground is a great place to put someone while to retain your footing so you can walk away. James www.celticstickfightingsociety.com
